MOOYAH Cheeseburger
The baseline, and a fair one: a single Angus patty, American cheese, lettuce, tomato and MOOYAH Sauce on a potato bun. The sauce is a creamy Thousand Island, so this tastes closer to a classic diner cheeseburger than to anything fancy. Order it with the fries, which are the better half of the meal, and go double only if you are hungry.
The story
MOOYAH Sauce is, by the chain’s own description, a creamy Thousand Island, and nobody knows for sure where Thousand Island came from. The usual story credits the Thousand Islands on the St. Lawrence River: a fishing guide’s wife in Clayton, New York, or the chef of Waldorf-Astoria owner George Boldt, who built a castle there. Researchers from the University of Wisconsin who tried to settle it in 2010 found only oral traditions that differed from island to island. The first printed mention is from Kansas City in 1912. Fast food made it the default “special sauce”, from the Big Mac to In-N-Out’s spread.

About MOOYAH Burgers, Fries & Shakes
Rich Hicks and Todd Istre opened the first MOOYAH in Plano, Texas, in 2007, part of the wave of “better burger” chains of the late 2000s. The name, the company says, is how a cow would shout “Booyah!”, and the whole brand talks in that tone. The first restaurant abroad opened in Dubai in 2013 as the chain’s fiftieth, and the hundredth opened in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 2016. In 2017 the founders sold to two private equity firms, Gala Capital Partners and Balmoral Funds.
Around a hundred restaurants in the United States and Canada, plus franchises in the Gulf states.
