Photo: Max BurgersOriginal
The burger that best explains Max. Swedish beef, melted cheddar, tomato, iceberg lettuce, yellow onion and the house Original dressing on a sesame bun. It looks like any cheeseburger, but the creamy dressing gives it a gentler, more Scandinavian flavour than ketchup-and-mustard burgers. A good, calm, reliable order.
The story
Max has printed the climate footprint of every item on its menu since 2008, when it became one of the first restaurant chains anywhere to have its emissions calculated per product and put the number next to the price. The Original is where that reads most plainly: Swedish beef, and a figure that dwarfs anything else on the board. The chain did not remove it — it added plant-based burgers beside it and let customers see the arithmetic, which is a more honest approach than most of the industry has managed.

About Max Burgers
Curt Bergfors and Britta Fredriksson opened the first Max in 1968 in Gällivare, a mining town in Swedish Lapland. The name came from Bergfors’s nickname, borrowed from the actor Max von Sydow. For two decades Max was a northern Swedish thing, with just one restaurant outside Norrland, before expanding across the country in the 1990s.
About 155 restaurants in Sweden, plus branches in Poland, Norway, Denmark and, through franchising, Egypt.
