Cheeseburger

  • 430 kcal

The Double-Double cut in half, and some regulars swear it is better balanced. With one patty the fresh lettuce, tomato and spread come forward, so it tastes brighter and lighter. It is also the smart order if you are getting fries and a shake and want to walk out comfortably. Swap the spread for mustard and ketchup and it drops to 380 calories.

The story

In-N-Out has sold three burgers since 1948 — hamburger, cheeseburger, Double-Double — and has never added a fourth. Every other chain in America spent those decades launching, renaming and discontinuing; In-N-Out kept the board at three burgers, fries and shakes, and grew anyway. The cheeseburger is the middle of that argument: one patty, one slice of American cheese, and the same hand-leafed lettuce, tomato and spread that go on everything else.

About In-N-Out Burger

  • United States
  • Since 1948
  • $

In-N-Out has ignored almost every rule of fast food for more than seventy years. Harry and Esther Snyder opened a tiny drive-thru stand in Baldwin Park, California, in 1948, and the family still owns every location. No franchising, no freezers, no microwaves, and a menu that has barely grown: three burgers, fries, shakes and drinks.

Family-owned and never franchised. Spread across the western and southwestern US, slowly moving east.
