Big Tasty
The burger that makes Americans jealous when they travel. A big beef patty under three slices of Emmental, with tomato, lettuce, onion and a smoky sauce that tastes faintly of barbecue. Emmental is a bold choice for fast food, nutty and stretchy instead of the usual processed slice, and it gives the whole thing a grown-up edge. Often sold with a bacon version too.
The story
McDonald’s built the Big Tasty for Europe in the early 2000s, and the United States never got a permanent version. The draw has always been the sauce, smoky and faintly barbecue-like, which exists nowhere else on the menu, and the Emmental, a real cheese in a lineup built on processed slices. Most countries sell it as a limited run rather than a fixture, so its return gets announced like news, and the chain has spent twenty years declining to make it permanent anywhere.

About McDonald's
Nobody sells more burgers. McDonald’s began as a single drive-in run by Richard and Maurice McDonald in San Bernardino, California, and became a burger machine in 1948, when the brothers threw out most of the menu and rebuilt the kitchen like a production line. Ray Kroc, a salesman who sold them milkshake mixers, started franchising it in 1955 and later bought the brothers out.
