Jollibee

Champ

Jollibee’s big burger, for when a Yumburger is not enough. A larger beef patty with cheese and fresh vegetables makes it the chain’s most substantial burger. It disappeared for a while and was brought back in 2020, which tells you how much people missed it.

    The story

Jollibee built its business on a small sweet burger and then had to answer the Americans on their own terms. The Champ is that answer: a large patty aimed squarely at the Whopper and the Big Mac, from a chain that had already beaten McDonald’s in the Philippines by refusing to cook like it. It is the only burger on the menu that plays by imported rules, which is why the Yumburger is still the one Filipinos name first.

There is no copycat of the Champ yet. Until there is, these recipes on the site come closest to it, judged by what goes into the bun.

    About Jollibee

    • Philippines
    • Since 1978
    • $

Tony Tan Caktiong opened an ice cream parlour in Quezon City in 1975, noticed that customers kept ordering the hot food instead, and turned it into Jollibee in 1978. When McDonald’s arrived in the Philippines in 1981, Jollibee did something most local chains failed to do: it won, by cooking for Filipino tastes rather than copying American ones.

Around 1,700 stores, more than 400 of them outside the Philippines, from Vietnam to Canada and the UK.
