Four patties and four slices of cheese: tall, heavy and structurally doomed. The bun gives up long before you do, so plan to finish it with a fork or not at all. It is less a meal than a rite of passage, the thing friends order on a first visit to see if they can.

There was a time when In-N-Out would build whatever you asked for. In 2004 a group in Las Vegas famously ordered a 100x100, a single burger with a hundred patties and a hundred slices of cheese, and the photos went round the early internet. Not long after, the chain capped orders at four patties, and the 4x4 became the official ceiling.
