Cheeseburger
The purest way to understand Five Guys. Because the patties are cooked well done on a flat grill rather than pink in the middle, the flavour comes from crust, not juice, and two slices of cheese melted between them hold everything together. Pick three toppings at most the first time. Grilled onions, pickles and mustard is a very hard combination to beat.
The story
Five Guys cooks every patty well done and will not do otherwise, and that policy has a date behind it. In 1993 undercooked patties at Jack in the Box caused an E. coli outbreak that killed four children, and the American burger industry rebuilt its cooking temperatures around it. Chains that ground their own beef took the hardest line. Five Guys built the rest of the burger to survive the rule: fresh beef, a hot flat grill, and fifteen free toppings to put the moisture back.

About Five Guys
Five Guys started in 1986 in Arlington, Virginia, when Jerry Murrell and his sons opened a carry-out burger joint with a deliberately tiny menu. The idea never changed: beef that is never frozen, patties cooked well done on a flat grill, fries cut from whole potatoes, and a box of peanuts to eat while you wait.
