Bio Fuel

BurgerFuel’s version of the classic Kiwi burger, and the best reason to visit if you are not from New Zealand. A smashed grass-fed patty with a fried free-range egg, raw grated beetroot with chia seeds, salad and aioli, on a wholemeal bun with tomato relish. The beetroot is fresh and crunchy rather than tinned, and the runny yolk ties it together. Expect purple fingers.

    The story

Beef with beetroot and a fried egg is the way New Zealanders have long built a takeaway burger, and McDonald’s acknowledged the habit in 1991 when it added the Kiwiburger to its national menu: a beef patty with griddled egg, beetroot, tomato, lettuce, cheese and onion. McDonald’s dropped it from the permanent menu in 2004 and has brought it back only for short runs since, most recently in 2023 and 2024. BurgerFuel keeps the same idea on its regular menu, with raw grated beetroot and chia seeds.
