Classic
Two patties with American cheese and the full backyard set: lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, mustard and ketchup. It is the burger most people picture when they think of an American burger joint, and Wayback does it plainly and well. The double patty makes it more substantial than the name suggests.
The story
This chain has changed its name twice. It started in Newark, Delaware, in 1991 as Jake’s Hamburgers, became Jake’s Wayback Burgers in 2010 as franchising picked up, and dropped the Jake’s altogether in 2014 to stop being confused with another chain. What did not change is the shape of the menu: nearly every signature burger is built on two patties rather than one, which puts it up against Five Guys rather than against a drive-thru. It has a sense of humour about itself, too, having once sold a milkshake made with cricket protein.
