About
At the drive-thru, Dorn insists they have all the ingredients for a McDLT, and he is right. The burger has been gone since 1990 and every McDonald’s still stocks every part of it.
The name is McDonald’s Lettuce and Tomato, and the whole idea was a two-part box: the patty and the bottom bun kept hot on one side, everything cold on the other, and you clapped them together yourself at the table. It works better than it should — the lettuce and pickles stay properly cold and crunchy against a hot patty, which is exactly what a normal burger loses on the way to the table. What killed it was the packaging, not the food: when polystyrene clamshells went in the early nineties, the burger went with them. Eight point two.

Recipe
- 1Cook the patty on a hot pan and season it. Keep the bottom bun with it, warm.
- 2On a separate plate, build the cold side on the top bun: ketchup, mustard, diced onion, three pickles, shredded lettuce, mayonnaise, the cheese slice and two slices of tomato.
- 3Keep the two halves apart until the last moment. That separation is the entire point of the burger.
- 4Bring the cold side down onto the hot side in one movement and press.
- 5Eat it immediately, while the patty is still hot and the lettuce has not warmed up.
