Whopper

  • Signature

The one burger Burger King is built around, and the anti-Big Mac. The patty is wide, thin and flame-grilled, so it tastes of char and smoke rather than griddle, and it comes with a proper salad on top: lettuce, tomato, pickles, raw onion, ketchup and mayo on a sesame bun. It is bigger and fresher-tasting than most fast-food burgers. Ask for it with cheese.

James McLamore created the Whopper in 1957 after noticing that a rival restaurant in Gainesville was doing well selling oversized burgers. It cost 37 cents and was marketed simply on being big. In the 1970s the “Have It Your Way” campaign turned its long list of toppings into a selling point, letting customers remove or add anything, and the Whopper has anchored the brand ever since.
