Checkerburger / Rallyburger

The single-patty classic, called a Checkerburger at Checkers and a Rallyburger at Rally’s, and identical at both. A beef patty with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, ketchup and mayo. It is the simplest way to eat here and leaves plenty of room for a large order of those seasoned fries.

    The story

One burger, two names, because of a merger that never finished. Rally’s opened in Nashville in 1985 and Checkers in Mobile in 1986, both building the same thing: a tiny box with two drive-thru lanes, a walk-up window and no dining room at all. They merged in 1999 but kept both signs, since each name was worth more in its own region than a single national one would have been. The menu was unified, so the same single-patty burger answers to whichever word is over the door.

These are two chains that grew up with the same idea and eventually merged. Rally’s opened in Nashville in 1985, Checkers in Mobile, Alabama, in 1986, and both built tiny buildings with two drive-thru lanes and a walk-up window but no dining room. They merged in 1999 and still run under both names, with an identical menu.

Hundreds of double drive-thrus across the US. Checkers in the east and south, Rally’s in the Midwest and west.
