Double Whopper
Two flame-grilled patties under the same Whopper salad. The second patty fixes the classic’s only real weakness, which is that the vegetables can overwhelm the thin beef, and makes it taste much more like a meat-forward burger. It is a big sandwich, so it pairs better with a small side than a large one.
The story
Burger King spent 1982 attacking its rivals by name. The Battle of the Burgers campaign claimed flame-broiling beat frying and that customers preferred the Whopper to the Big Mac, and it worked well enough that both McDonald’s and Wendy’s took Burger King to court over it. Comparative advertising was still close to taboo in American fast food; afterwards it was normal. The doubled Whopper belongs to that argument — the answer to a rival is more beef, and the flame is what the ads insisted made it count.
