The story
Jack Caddell opened a walk-up stand in Homewood, outside Birmingham, on 21 November 1960, selling hamburgers and fries at fifteen cents and shakes at twenty. The remodelled original building is still the chain’s flagship. What made Jack’s grow was aiming at children before anyone else in the South did: it sponsored a local Popeye television show, and a generation of Alabama kids learned the name from cartoons. The Big Jack is the burger that has carried it ever since, alongside the breakfast biscuits it is equally known for.
