Giant
Quick’s flagship burger and its long-running answer to the Big Mac. A double-decker with beef, cheese, lettuce and a special sauce, familiar to anyone who grew up in Belgium or France in the 1980s and 1990s. For those customers it is not an imitation but a childhood favourite in its own right.
The story
The Giant has been Quick’s answer to the Big Mac since the early 1980s, and for a long time it was the most convincing one in Europe. Quick opened near Antwerp in 1971 and grew into the only home-grown chain that could hold its own against McDonald’s in Belgium and France, which made the double-decker a point of national loyalty rather than a copy. Burger King’s owners bought Quick in 2016 and converted many French restaurants, so the Giant now survives mostly in Belgium.

Belgian businessman François Vaxelaire opened the first Quick in Schoten, just outside Antwerp, in 1971, followed by a second restaurant in Waterloo. For decades it was Europe’s most serious home-grown rival to McDonald’s, especially in Belgium and France, where for many people it was simply the other burger place.
