Double Cheeseburger
The burger that made the restaurant: stacked beef patties with American cheese, Dijonnaise and house-made pickles on a toasted bun. Intensely beefy and tender, with the sharp mustard mayo and pickles cutting the richness. Add the thick, peppered bacon and a fried egg for the full experience.
The story
Brendan Sodikoff opened Au Cheval in Chicago’s West Loop in 2012, and the cheeseburger quickly drew national attention: Chicago readers voted it the city’s best and Food Network called it the best burger in America. Its formula of beef patties, American cheese, Dijonnaise and pickles, with a fried egg on top if you want it “au cheval”, has been widely imitated, and in 2026 it was ranked the best burger in the United States by The World’s Best Burgers.

About Au Cheval
The restaurateur Brendan Sodikoff, whose Hogsalt group also runs Bavette’s and other Chicago favourites, opened Au Cheval in 2012 in the West Loop, a dressed-up take on the classic American diner. Its cheeseburger became famous almost immediately; Chicago readers voted it the city’s best and Food Network named it the best burger in America.
Diners in Chicago’s West Loop, New York’s Tribeca and Nashville, plus the Small Cheval spin-offs around Chicago.
