The story
Patty & Bun names its burgers after pop-culture figures, and this one is a pun twice over. Smokey Robinson is the Motown singer and songwriter who led the Miracles and wrote hits for them and for other Motown acts, and the burger is the chain’s smoky one: bacon, caramelised onions and a smoked mayo. The London chain started as pop-ups in 2012 and kept its playful names as it grew, alongside the Ari Gold, named after the agent in Entourage, and the Jose Jose, named after the Mexican singer José José.

Patty & Bun grew out of London’s street-food boom in the early 2010s, starting as pop-ups before opening its first permanent restaurant off Oxford Street in 2012. It became one of the places that convinced Londoners a burger could be worth queuing for, at a time when the city was waking up to American-style burger joints.
