Cheetos Chicken Sandwich

  • No longer sold
  • US limited run, 2019

A 2019 American limited run that sounds like a dare: crispy fried chicken with crunchy Cheetos and a bright orange Cheetos-flavoured cheese sauce on a bun. It was loud, salty and gleefully artificial, and it lived exactly as long as a gimmick should. Fans still bring it up.

The story

For a stretch around 2019 American fast food went through a phase of putting one brand inside another — crisps, sweets and cereal turning up on burgers and in milkshakes — because a mashup buys press coverage that an ordinary new sandwich cannot. KFC’s entry was a fried chicken fillet with whole Cheetos inside the bun and a cheese sauce made from them. It ran as a limited item, which is what these launches are for: the point was never to keep it.
