KFC’s entry into the American chicken sandwich wars arrived late and landed well. A big extra-crispy fillet, thick pickles and mayo on a buttery brioche bun, clearly aimed at the famous sandwiches from rival chains. The crust is the strength here, because crust is what KFC has always done best.
The story
KFC had a chicken sandwich for years and almost nobody ordered it. Then Popeyes launched one in August 2019, sold out nationwide in two weeks and turned the category into the most competitive corner of American fast food. KFC rebuilt from scratch and launched this in 2021: a bigger extra-crispy fillet, pickles and sauce on a brioche bun. For a company whose whole identity is fried chicken, arriving late to a fried chicken sandwich war was an awkward place to start.
