The quiet test of the kitchen on a menu full of show-offs. A house patty with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and Doddy Mayo, fully customisable. Because everything else here is so elaborate, it is easy to overlook, and it is one of the best-made classic cheeseburgers in Texas.
The story
The name is two halves of an argument about what the place is. Hops, because it opened on South Congress in Austin in 2010 as a burger bar for a city that takes its beer seriously. Doddy, because that is an old Scottish word for a hornless cow — the polled cattle that became Aberdeen Angus. A restaurant that grinds its beef in house and bakes its buns daily naming itself after the animal is showing its working, and the plain cheeseburger is where you check whether it was worth it.

About Hopdoddy Burger Bar
Hopdoddy opened on South Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas, in 2010, and the name gives away the idea: hops, as in craft beer, and a “doddy”, an old Scottish word for a hornless cow. It was built as a burger bar for a city that takes both food and drink seriously, with beef ground in-house and buns baked daily.
Around 40 burger bars, most of them in Texas and the western US.
