Cheeseburger
A simple Hesburger cheeseburger with the chain’s signature sauces. It is the everyday order across Finland and the Baltics, cheap and familiar. The sauces, especially the garlic mayo, are what make it taste distinctly Hesburger rather than generic fast food.
The story
Heikki Salmela, known to everyone as Hese, started with a street food kiosk in 1966 and opened the first Hesburger in Turku in 1980, naming it after himself. The garlic mayonnaise is the thing Finns describe first and miss abroad, and it is on almost everything. The scale is the surprise: by 2008 Hesburger held a bigger share of the Nordic and Baltic market than McDonald’s, which is a rare case of a local chain beating the American giant across an entire region rather than one city.
