Teriyaki Char
A chargrilled patty glazed with teriyaki and topped with a slice of grilled pineapple, a nod to Southern California’s love of anything sweet and salty. It is lighter and brighter than the other chars, and the smoke from the grill keeps the glaze from tasting like dessert. 640 calories with cheese.
The story
The teriyaki burger was born in Japan: MOS Burger launched the first one in May 1973, glazing a beef patty in sweet soy sauce. It sold slowly until Japanese high-school students took it up, and then every Japanese chain made one. The Habit, which started in 1969 as a small family burger stand called The Hamburger Habit near Santa Barbara, puts its own version on the menu: a chargrilled patty brushed with teriyaki glaze and topped with grilled pineapple, lettuce and tomato.

The Habit started in 1969 as The Hamburger Habit, a small family burger stand in Goleta, near Santa Barbara, California. Brothers Brent and Bruce Reichard bought it in 1980 and grew it slowly, keeping the thing that made it work: burgers cooked over an open flame, which the chain calls Charburgers.
Around 370 locations, mostly in California and the western US, plus a handful abroad.
