Gourmet Burger Kitchen

Kiwiburger

  • Signature

The burger that tells you who started GBK. Beef with mature Cheddar, beetroot, a fried egg and grilled pineapple, plus house mayo, relish and salad. It sounds like a fridge raid, but beetroot and a runny egg are exactly what a New Zealander expects on a takeaway burger. Messy to eat, and the one to order first.

The story

GBK has sold the Kiwiburger since its first restaurant opened in 2001, and the menu says so. The build is a New Zealand and Australian takeaway habit rather than a chef’s invention: a burger “with the lot” there has long meant beetroot, a fried egg and often pineapple on top of the beef. Three New Zealanders opening a burger restaurant in London put their home version on the menu, and it became the burger the chain is known for.

About Gourmet Burger Kitchen

  • United Kingdom
  • Since 2001
  • $$

Gourmet Burger Kitchen opened in Battersea, south London, in 2001. It was started by three New Zealanders, Adam Wills, Greg Driscoll and Brandon Allen, with the New Zealand-born chef Peter Gordon shaping the menu, and it is credited with bringing the idea of a “gourmet burger” to London a decade before the city’s burger boom. A light Kiwi theme still runs through the restaurants, most obviously in the Kiwiburger.

Around ten restaurants after the 2020 restructuring, run from Birmingham by the Boparan Restaurant Group.
