The story

Burgerville has spent sixty years being a Pacific Northwest chain rather than a national one: Tillamook cheddar, Walla Walla sweet onions while they are in season, milkshakes that follow the local harvest, and billboards on the highway out of its territory joking that the next branch is 24,700 miles away. In 2018 its workers voted in the Burgerville Workers Union, the first union at an American fast-food company to win federal recognition, which made a regional drive-thru a landmark in a fight the whole industry was watching.

George Propstra opened the first Burgerville in Vancouver, Washington, in 1961, and the chain has never strayed far from home. Every location sits within a short drive of Portland, and on highways leaving its territory there are billboards warning that the next Burgerville is roughly 24,700 miles away, the long way round the planet.
