Original Chicken Sandwich

    The long one. A breaded chicken patty on a sesame sub-style roll with shredded lettuce and mayo, a shape that has been on the menu for decades and that fans defend fiercely whenever it changes. It is soft, simple and nostalgic. Outside the US the same sandwich goes by Long Chicken or Chicken Royale.

    The story

    Burger King put this on the menu in 1979, and it has barely been touched since. The shape is the giveaway: a long sesame-seed roll rather than a burger bun, built to hold a breaded fillet that is longer than it is wide, with shredded lettuce and mayonnaise and nothing else. It predates almost every chicken sandwich in American fast food, and when the chicken sandwich wars broke out in 2019 Burger King launched new sandwiches around it rather than changing it.

    Burger King started in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1953 as Insta-Burger King, named after a broiler oven that did not really work. Two franchisees in Miami, James McLamore and David Edgerton, fixed the problem with a flame broiler, took over the company, and gave Burger King the one thing that still separates it from McDonald’s: burgers cooked over a flame instead of on a flat griddle.
