Big Hit
The replacement for the Big Mac, and the burger the chain struggled to launch. Two patties, cheese, lettuce, pickles, onions and a special sauce on a three-part bun, it is as close to the original as the name is far from it. For Russian customers, it is the test of whether the new chain gets the old one right.
The story
When McDonald’s sold its Russian restaurants in 2022, the recipes went with the brand. The new owners kept the buildings, the staff and most of the kitchen, but they could not sell a Big Mac, and for months the most famous burger in the chain simply had no replacement. The Big Hit arrived later as a purpose-built stand-in with the same architecture — two patties, a middle bun, shredded lettuce and a sauce of its own. It is the clearest illustration of what a brand actually owns.

About Vkusno i Tochka
McDonald’s left Russia in 2022 and sold its restaurants to Alexander Govor, who had been a McDonald’s licensee in Siberia. The chain reopened on 12 June 2022 under the name Vkusno i Tochka, roughly “Tasty, full stop”, in the same buildings, with much of the same staff and kitchen equipment.
Around a thousand restaurants in Russia, most of them former McDonald’s.
