About MOS Burger

MOS Burger opened in Tokyo in 1972 with a very un-fast-food idea: cook everything only after it is ordered. The name was later given a meaning, Mountain, Ocean, Sun, and the chain became Japan’s biggest home-grown answer to McDonald’s, now its second-largest burger chain.

What makes it worth seeking out is how Japanese the menu is. The signature burger comes with a rich meat sauce instead of ketchup, teriyaki is a permanent fixture, and since 1987 you can order a burger whose bun is a pressed patty of grilled rice. It is slower than a drive-thru and tastes like it.
