Rebel Whopper
Hungry Jack’s plant-based Whopper, introduced in 2019. The meat-free patty goes through the same flame broiler and gets the full Whopper treatment, so the smoky flavour carries most of the illusion. A good option for vegetarians who miss the taste of a flame-grilled burger.
The story
Hungry Jack’s launched this in 2019 with a patty from v2food, an Australian company set up with the country’s national science agency specifically to build plant-based meat. That is a different route from the American chains, which licensed patties from Impossible and Beyond: Australia grew its own supplier. The burger goes through the same flame broiler as the beef, which the chain has been open about, so it is plant-based rather than strictly vegetarian.

About Hungry Jack's
When Jack Cowin bought the Australian franchise for Burger King in 1970, he hit a problem: a small Adelaide takeaway had already trademarked the name “Burger King” in Australia. Burger King offered him a list of other names it owned, and he picked Hungry Jack, a Pillsbury pancake mix, adding the apostrophe and an S. The first restaurant opened in Perth in 1971.
Around 440 restaurants across Australia, most of them company-owned.
