Patty Melt

  • Signature

A Chicago take on the diner classic: a Black Angus patty with two slices of melted aged cheddar, grilled onions, a giardiniera pepper blend and Epic sauce on a buttery brioche bun. The pickled peppers give it heat and acidity that most patty melts lack. The most local thing on the menu.

The story

Giardiniera is an Italian relish of pickled vegetables, eaten in Italy as an antipasto. In Chicago it took a different form: chopped peppers, often hot sport peppers, with celery, carrots and cauliflower kept in oil rather than vinegar. Its classic home is the Italian beef sandwich, thin-sliced roast beef soaked in its juices, which Italian Americans in Chicago were making by the 1930s, ordered “hot” with giardiniera or “sweet” with peppers. In Chicago it also goes on subs and pizza, and increasingly on burgers.
