A very South African burger. A grilled chicken fillet basted in peri-peri, with crispy onion rings, cheese, lettuce and a creamy peri-peri mayo. Peri-peri is a Southern African favourite, the onion rings add crunch, and it is the pick if you want something other than beef.
The story
Peri-peri is a Portuguese word for an African chilli, and the sauce is a product of the same trade routes: chillies came from the Americas to Portuguese ports in Africa, took root in Mozambique and Angola as the small, fierce bird’s eye, and came back as a marinade of chilli, garlic, lemon and oil. Southern Africa has cooked chicken that way for generations, and Wimpy’s South African menu treats it as a default rather than an exotic option.

About Wimpy
Edward Gold opened the first Wimpy Grills in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1934, naming it after J. Wellington Wimpy, the Popeye character who would gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today. In 1954 the British caterer J. Lyons licensed the name, and Wimpy Bars spread across the UK, giving many Britons an early taste of the American hamburger, served at the table.
