Impossible Slider

The oldest burger chain in America was, oddly, one of the first to put a plant-based patty on its menu. The Impossible patty is steamed on onions like the original and served with smoked cheddar or jalapeño cheese. Because the slider is all about onion, steam and cheese anyway, the swap is much harder to notice than in a bigger grilled burger.

    The story

White Castle added the Impossible Slider in 2018, a year before Burger King’s Impossible Whopper made plant-based burgers a national story. For a chain famous for resisting change, it was a surprisingly early bet.

    About White Castle

    • United States
    • Since 1921
    • $

White Castle is where fast food begins. Walter Anderson and Billy Ingram opened the first one in Wichita, Kansas, in 1921, selling small square burgers for a nickel from a building made to look like a castle, a deliberate signal that the kitchen was clean at a time when Americans did not trust ground beef. It was the first hamburger chain in the country, and the Ingram family still owns it.

Around 300 restaurants, mostly in the Midwest and around New York. Still family-owned.
