McArabia

  • Middle East

McDonald’s in the Gulf quietly dropped the bun. Two grilled chicken patties are folded into warm Arabic flatbread with lettuce, tomato, onion and garlic mayo, and the result eats more like something from a shawarma counter than a burger joint. It is lighter than anything on the American menu and much easier to eat walking around.

The story

McDonald’s spent its first decade in the Gulf selling the American menu with the pork taken out. The McArabia, launched in 2003, was the first thing it built for the region instead: grilled patties, salad and garlic sauce folded into Arabic flatbread rather than a bun, closer to a shawarma than to anything in the core lineup. It became permanent across the Gulf, Egypt, Pakistan and Morocco, and versions of the same idea have since turned up as far away as Malaysia and Indonesia.

About McDonald's

Nobody sells more burgers. McDonald’s began as a single drive-in run by Richard and Maurice McDonald in San Bernardino, California, and became a burger machine in 1948, when the brothers threw out most of the menu and rebuilt the kitchen like a production line. Ray Kroc, a salesman who sold them milkshake mixers, started franchising it in 1955 and later bought the brothers out.

More than 40,000 restaurants in over 100 countries.
