Royal Crispy Chicken

    Burger King’s current answer to the chicken sandwich wars: a thick crispy white-meat fillet with lettuce, tomato and a creamy Royal sauce on a potato bun. It is a serious step up from the chain’s older chicken sandwiches, with a crust that actually stays crisp. There are spicy and bacon-and-Swiss versions alongside.

    The story

    Burger King had sold the same long chicken sandwich since 1979 when Popeyes set off the chicken sandwich war in 2019. Its first answer was the hand-breaded Ch’King, announced in February 2021 and launched that May in original, spicy and deluxe versions. It did not last: in 2022 Burger King replaced it with the Royal Crispy Chicken line, launched in four versions at once — Classic, Spicy, Bacon and Swiss, and Southern BBQ. The BBQ one has since been dropped. The Original Chicken Sandwich stayed on the menu beside it.

    Burger King started in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1953 as Insta-Burger King, named after a broiler oven that did not really work. Two franchisees in Miami, James McLamore and David Edgerton, fixed the problem with a flame broiler, took over the company, and gave Burger King the one thing that still separates it from McDonald’s: burgers cooked over a flame instead of on a flat griddle.
