Hamburg

The plainest thing at Swensons and a cheap way into the menu: a fresh-ground, made-to-order beef patty served “with everything”, which at Swensons means mustard, dill pickles and onions. No ketchup, no lettuce, no cheese. It is the old Ohio drive-in burger in its simplest form, and it sits on the under-$4 value menu.

Wesley “Pop” Swenson started selling hamburgers out of a station wagon at Akron’s Buchtel High School in 1933, and opened a proper drive-in on South Hawkins Avenue the following year. He sold it in 1949 to Robert Phillips, who began a slow expansion that has only recently reached Columbus, Cincinnati and Indiana.
