The Krystal
The original little square burger: a thin patty with diced onions, a pickle and yellow mustard on a soft steamed bun. It is two or three bites and costs very little, so nobody orders just one. The mustard is what separates it from its northern cousin, adding a sharp tang that cuts through the steamed onions.
The small square burger has been Krystal’s centrepiece since 1932, and it turned into a competitive sport. At the 2007 Krystal Square Off, competitive eater Joey Chestnut set a record by eating 103 Krystal burgers in eight minutes, a feat that says a lot about the burgers’ size and even more about Joey Chestnut.
