About Giraffas
Two friends, Mauro Lacerda and Muniz Neto, opened the first Giraffas in Lago Sul, a district of Brasília, in April 1981. It began franchising in 1991, nearly went under when Brazil’s inflation collapsed in the mid-1990s, and was sold in 1996 to three friends of the founders with no restaurant experience, who rebuilt it around franchising.
The rebuild worked: Giraffas passed 200 restaurants in 2006 and is now one of the big Brazilian fast-food brands competing directly with McDonald’s and Burger King. It has also tried its luck abroad, with branches in Miami and in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay.
