Original Double Steakburger
The burger that built Freddy’s. Two thin steakburger patties pressed until their edges go lacy and crunchy, with cheese, pickles, onions, mustard and the tangy, slightly sweet Freddy’s Sauce on a toasted bun. The crispy fringe around each patty is the whole point, so do not let it sit. Many fans add a sprinkle of Freddy’s famous fry seasoning.
The story
Freddy’s opened in Wichita in 2002, in the city where White Castle had started the American burger chain eighty years earlier, and it was built as a deliberate throwback. Freddy Simon, a Second World War veteran whose sons named the place after him, had spent his life in restaurants, and the menu copies the burger stands of the late 1940s: two thin patties pressed hard on a griddle so the edges go lacy, shoestring fries, and frozen custard churned on site.

Freddy’s opened in Wichita, Kansas, in 2002, founded by brothers Bill and Randy Simon, their business partner Scott Redler, and their father, Freddy Simon. Freddy was a Second World War veteran who had earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star and spent more than half a century in the restaurant business. The chain was built to feel like the burger places of his youth in the late 1940s and 1950s.
