About Dairy Queen
Dairy Queen opened in Joliet, Illinois, in June 1940, selling soft serve that its founders had perfected. For most people it is still the Blizzard place, the thick blended ice cream served upside down to prove it will not fall out. But Dairy Queen has sold burgers since the late 1950s, when a franchisee in Georgia created the Brazier line of broiled burgers and hot dogs.
Burgers matter more at DQ than people outside the South realise. In Texas, where Dairy Queen is a small-town institution, restaurants run their own menu with burgers like the Hungr-Buster and the half-pound BeltBuster. Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway has owned the company since 1998, and in 2023 DQ overhauled its burgers into the Signature Stackburger line.
