Fried Bologna

A Midwestern classic and, according to the menu, a Swensons favourite: a quarter-pound slice of bologna fried on the griddle until the edges curl and crisp, served with grilled onions and mustard. It eats like a cross between a hot dog and a burger, salty and soft with a charred edge. Cheap, old-fashioned and surprisingly good.

Wesley “Pop” Swenson started selling hamburgers out of a station wagon at Akron’s Buchtel High School in 1933, and opened a proper drive-in on South Hawkins Avenue the following year. He sold it in 1949 to Robert Phillips, who began a slow expansion that has only recently reached Columbus, Cincinnati and Indiana.
