Honest Burgers

Tom Barton and Phil Eeles founded Honest Burgers in 2009 and grew it into one of the best-known names in London’s burger boom. The restaurants are casual and the menu is short, built around a handful of beef burgers alongside chicken and plant-based options.

The detail everyone remembers is the chips. Every burger comes with rosemary salted chips unless you swap them for slaw or salad, and they have become as much a part of the brand as the burgers themselves. Order extra: you will want them.

Around forty restaurants, mostly in London, plus branches in cities such as Brighton, Cardiff, Liverpool and Manchester.

• Patty & Bun (United Kingdom, since 2012). The London burger joint that names its burgers after TV characters and soul singers. Also built on beef, bacon and cheese.
• PNY (France, since 2012). Paris New York: flame-grilled burgers of aged grass-fed beef, with a different exclusive burger in every branch. Also built on beef, bacon and cheese.
• Byron (United Kingdom, since 2007). The London chain that led Britain’s gourmet burger boom, then shrank back to a handful of restaurants. Also built on beef, bacon and cheese.
• Bleecker Burger (United Kingdom, since 2012). A London burger bar started from a food truck by a New York lawyer, with two Burger of the Year titles. Also built on beef, bacon and cheese.
