A spatula bends the moment you lean on it, so the patty ends up thick in the middle and burnt at the edges. A flat cast iron press holds the whole surface down for the ten seconds that actually build the crust.

Two different things live here. Merch is ours — printed, shipped and supported by Fourthwall, who handle the order from checkout onwards. Burger gear is not ours: it is equipment we cook with, linked to a retailer that pays us a commission.
We earn a commission from some links on this page. It does not change the price you pay, and no brand pays to be listed — the gear below is chosen first and monetised second.
Merch
T-shirts, hoodies, caps and an apron. Orders are handled by Fourthwall: they print, ship and answer support questions, and they are the merchant of record on the receipt.
Burger gear
None of this is our product. It is the equipment used to cook the recipes on this site, with a note on why it earned its place. Links go to a retailer and are marked as sponsored.
Smash burgers need a surface that stays hot when cold meat hits it. Carbon steel recovers heat faster than nonstick and weighs less than the equivalent cast iron, which matters when you are moving it on and off the heat between batches.

View on WalmartThick pub-style patties and stuffed burgers are guesswork without one — the outside looks done long before the middle is. Anything that reads in under three seconds is enough; the expensive models are not meaningfully more accurate.
